- What do you think it means for God to be described as “mighty”? In what ways is he mighty?
- The beginning of Psalm 29 (v.1-2) is an instruction to worship and glorify God.
- What do you think it means to glorify God?
- Do you ever find yourself worshipping or seeking your security in something or someone other than God? Look at Isaiah 44:6-10 do these verses help you to see God as the only one worth glorifying?
- Psalm 29 uses the phrase “the voice of the Lord” seven times.
- What does the psalm tell us about the voice of God?
- What makes the voice of God so powerful? [Think about the way God speaks at creation in Genesis 1, or Jesus commands the storm in Mark 4:35-41]
- In Mark 4:38 Jesus’ disciples ask him a question. Have you ever been in a situation where you have wondered if God really cared about you? Was there a point where he showed his care?
- When Jesus shows his power over the storm the disciples were terrified and confused (Mark 4:40-41). Why is it frightening to experience the power of God?
- God is described as a powerful king in Psalm 29:10 – the psalmist then says that the Lord gives strength to his people. How does the picture of God as “enthroned over the flood” offer strength to his people? Do you find this an encouraging picture?
- The end of Psalm 29 says that God blesses his people with peace.
- How does Jesus’ words “Quiet! Be still!” in Mark 4:39 bring peace both over the storm, and in the hearts of the disciples?
- When life is hard (stormy), how can you hear God’s voice bringing peace?
- Look at the song the angels’ sang in Luke 2:13-14 when Jesus was born.
- What is the connection between glorifying God and peace on earth? [Think about the end of Psalm 29]
- How might getting the focus of your worship right bring about peace?
